Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center's High Risk Clinic assesses a person for the probability of carrying genes that
could lead to cancer development.
Certain types of cancer--breast, ovarian, colorectal and endometrial—may have a
strong link with heredity. If other family members had it, you're at increased risk.

The High Risk Clinic at the Novant Health Derrick L. Davis Cancer Center can
help you and your healthcare providers make informed decisions about managing your
Here's how it works
We'll ask you to fill out an extensive questionnaire that asks about your personal
and family history and then provide an individualized, hour-long counseling session.
An oncologist, oncology nurse, and another trained counselor, together, will meet with you to answer your questions and develop a plan of care.
You'll learn how likely you are to have a genetic mutation that may increase cancer
risk. You'll find out about the possible effect on other family members. We'll talk
with you about medical interventions you might want to consider. We'll discuss any
insurance and privacy concerns you might have.
We'll send the reports of this evaluation to you, your referring physician and other
healthcare providers you've designated. If you decide to have genetic testing, we'll
take care of having the tests done and seeking insurance coverage for you. When
the results are ready, we'll call to set up an appointment to discuss them with

As many as one in 500 people carry genetic mutations that may put them at increased
risk for cancer.
