Lung cancer is the leading cancer killer in the United States, yet it is one of the most preventable cancers.

Researchers have discovered several causes of lung cancer, most of which are related to the use of tobacco products including cigarettes, cigars, pipes and even exposure to second-hand tobacco smoke. Other known causes of lung cancer include radon gas and asbestos. Certain lung diseases such as tuberculosis (TB) also increase a person's chance of developing lung cancer.

Are You at Risk for Lung Cancer?

Knowing the risk factors of lung cancer and living a healthy lifestyle play an important role in the prevention of lung cancer.

Smoking is the number one cause for lung cancer, with about 87 percent of lung cancer cases thought to be a result of smoking. Former smokers are also at an increased risk of developing lung cancer. Additionally, those who have had any of the following exposures or characteristics are also at risk:

  • Second-hand smoke
  • Smoking marijuana
  • Recurring inflammation
  • Asbestos exposure
  • Talcum powder
  • Cancer-causing agents
  • Radon
  • Family history of lung cancer
  • Personal history of lung cancer
