Long-time colleagues and friends Drs. Malcolm Brown and David Collins shared a vision to include a meditation room as part of the new intensive care units at Forsyth Medical Center to complete the circle of care for body, mind and spirit. This vision was realized in May when both men were honored at the dedication of the meditation room named in honor of Dr. Collins and made possible by a gift from Dr. Brown and his wife, Patty. "Helping to build our new intensive care units is one of the most energizing and important things Ive done in my career," Collins said when Brown handed him a plaque now mounted on the wall at the entrance to the room.
The meditation room is a special place where families of all faiths can come to find comfort and strength. "Incredible care comes only from taking care of the complete patient and this space is an important piece to allow us to address all the needs of our critically ill patients and their families," said Collins.
The Dr. David Collins Meditation Room is located inside the ICU waiting room on the first floor of Forsyth Medical Center. Special lighting selected by the Browns features soft colors that fade in and out, creating a quiet, calming effect. The Brown's gift to the Forsyth Medical Center Foundation to create the room included design and construction, lighting effects and specially selected designer furnishings.
"My wife, Patty, and I thought this room with its special lighting would serve as an important place for reflection and thinking," Brown said. "We also thought it very important that David be remembered because he initiated the ICU project. Patty and I wanted to give this room for the families and patients that are cared for in ICU, and we are pleased to do so in honor of David Collins."
