Forsyth Medical Center is one of the largest medical centers in North Carolina, serving more than two-thirds of the people requiring hospital care in Forsyth County, as well as residents from neighboring Northwest North Carolina counties. In October 2004, the hospital opened a 55,000-square-foot emergency department, which a year later treated approximately 85,000 patients - the highest number of emergency room visits in this area. In 2006, Forsyth Medical Center partnered with Duke University to offer patients access the most current clinical trial cancer treatments at the Derrick L. Davis Forsyth Regional Cancer Center.

The Forsyth Stroke & Neurovascular Center at FMC was the first in North and South Carolina to receive Primary Stroke Care certification. The Sara Lee Center for Women's Health at FMC is the second-largest birthing center in North Carolina, delivering more than 6,700 infants in 2005. The Center houses a Level III/IV neonatal intensive care unit that serves 20 counties in North Carolina and southern Virginia and treats more than 1,000 premature and medically fragile infants annually.
