Special Events & Volunteer Opportunities
An individual's gift of time and talent to help raise financial gifts as well as participation in these events are extremely appreciated. Here's more about what's upcoming.
The Forsyth Medical Center Foundation staff greatly appreciates the special events donors hold to raise funding to support patient programs and services. Through the years, these events have created special funds to help patients who might not otherwise have been able to get the treatment they need. If you have an interest in hosting an event to support programs and services at Forsyth Medical Center, please contact the Foundation at 336-718-2101.
Super Bowl Benefit for a Super Cause
To honor the memory of Dr. Lee Simstein, a former surgeon at Forsyth Medical Center and member of the Wake Forest University football team during the 1960s, Mrs. Simstein and their daughters decided the ideal tribute would be a Super Bowl party. February 3rd will be the fourth Super Bowl Benefit for the Lee Simstein Memorial Fund established at the Derrick L. Davis Forsyth Regional Cancer Center to help patients with limited financial resources undergoing cancer treatment.

The fund is dedicated to helping cancer patients who cannot afford personal expenses related to treatments-medications, transportation to appointments, lodging during treatments and more. Since 2003, the Simstein Fund has raised more than $100,000 and has assisted annually about 100 cancer patients receiving treatment at Forsyth Medical Center.

Dr. Simstein is remembered for his philanthropic generosity toward patients in need. To perpetuate his generous spirit, on Super Bowl Sunday consider a donation and encourage other sports fans to make a donation to a super cause-the Simstein fund. Your gifts will make a difference in the life of someone with cancer.

To make a contribution, mail your check to: Forsyth Medical Center Foundation, 3333 Silas Creek Parkway, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. Be sure to indicate Simstein Benefit. Or, to donate online click on the link below and be sure to indicate the gift is for the Lee Simstein Memorial Fund.

"Smash Cancer" Tennis Tournament
Mark your calendars now! Triad tennis players will be taking to the courts to "smash" cancer on Sept. 20-22, 2007. The occasion will be the third annual doubles tennis benefit for the Derrick L. Davis Forsyth Regional Cancer Center. Organizers of the tournament are Vicki and Maurice Everette and Beth and Sandy Baldwin, who several years ago made a generous gift to help create a clinical trial and research area in memory of their son, Branner Dixson Baldwin. At the 2005 and 2006 tournaments, players and sponors raised more than $40,000 to support the Center's nurse navigator program, which provides individual guidance and support to patients in treatment for breast, lung, esophageal and gastrointestinal cancer.
Cowgirls with a Cause
Cowgirls with a Cause will return to the Diamond V Arena in Harmony, N.C., on Saturday, October 6, 2007, for the Fourth Annual Debby Burgess Memorial Rodeo to benefit the fight against breast cancer. Debby Burgess was an avid rodeo competitor before losing her battle with breast cancer in 2003.
In 2006, the Debby Burgess Memorial Rodeo exceeded $16,000. These funds provided mammogram screenings for 90 women who otherwise would not have been able to have one as well as follow-up diagnostic screenings for 45 women who had questionable areas. Of those, six women required biopsies and four learned that they have breast cancer. The rodeo event demonstrates that the fight against breast cancer is indeed a community effort.
Speaking of Women's Health
Each year, more than 900 women gather at the Benton Convention Center in Winston-Salem in late spring to celebrate good physical, emotional, social and financial health of women at Speaking of Women's Health. All proceeds of the event benefit the outreach programs of the Sara Lee Center for Women's Health. One of 30 cities to host this extraordinary opportunity, Winston-Salem became the first city between Atlanta and Washington, D.C. when it was selected in 2004. The Sara Lee Center for Women's Health and the Forsyth Medical Center Foundation appreciate all the time and sponsorships given by the community to offer this opportunity to the women in our region. Click the link below to find out more about the program and the sponsors who make it possible.
Forsyth Medical Center Auxiliary
In 1971, 615 women chartered The Forsyth Medical Center Auxiliary to support hospital programs. In addition to giving their time, the Auxiliary generates income to support the Medical Center through the FMC Gift Shop, Day One Newborn Photography and Lifeline, as well as through employee fundraisers. Several years ago, the Auxiliary gave $1 million for the Cancer Commons Area, which is named in the group's honor. Anyone interested in giving time as a volunteer should contact Volunteer Services at 336-718-5738.
