Endometrial cancer is cancer of the lining of the uterus. The most common symptom of endometrial cancer is abnormal bleeding. This includes bleeding that occurs after you have gone through menopause. For women who are still having periods, an increase in menstrual flow, periods coming more frequently, or bleeding between periods may be symptoms of endometrial cancer. All of these symptoms need to be evaluated by a physician.
Diagnosing Endometrial Cancer
The Pap Test only finds about 25% of endometrial cancers. A pelvic ultrasound or a transvaginal ultrasound may be performed to evaluate the thickness of the lining of the uterus. An endometrial biopsy (small biopsy of the uterus done in the office) or D&C (large biopsy of the lining of the uterus performed in the operating room) may also be performed to take biopsies of the uterus.
