High Risk Clinic
| The Derrick L. Davis Forsyth Regional Cancer Center's High Risk Clinic assesses a person for the probability of carrying genes that could lead to cancer development. |
Certain types of cancer--breast, ovarian, colorectal and endometrial--may have a strong link with heredity. If other family members had it, you're at increased risk.
What to do about it?
The High Risk Clinic at the Derrick L. Davis Forsyth Regional Cancer Center can help you and your healthcare providers make informed decisions about managing your risks.
Here's how it works.
We'll ask you to fill out an extensive questionnaire that asks about your personal and family history and then provide an individualized, hour-long counseling session. An oncologist, oncology nurse and another trained counselor will sit down together with you to answer your questions and develop a plan of care.
You'll learn how likely you are to have a genetic mutation which may increase cancer risk. You'll find out about the possible effect on other family members. We'll talk with you about medical interventions you might want to consider. We'll discuss any insurance and privacy concerns you might have.
What's next?
We'll send the reports of this evaluation to you, your referring physician and other healthcare providers you've designated. If you decide to have genetic testing, we'll take care of having the tests done and seeking insurance coverage for you. When the results are ready, we'll call to set up an appointment to discuss them with you.
Hereditary Cancers...Are you at risk?
As many as one in 500 people carry genetic mutations that may put them at increased risk for cancer.
Do you have a personal or family history of:
- Breast, ovarian, colorectal or endometrial cancer?
- Early onset of cancer?
- Multiple cancer diagnoses?
Our High Risk Clinic can give you the information you need to protect your health and your family. Plus, your family members will know if they, too are at increased risk of developing certain cancers.
