Lung Cancer
| Lung cancer is the leading cancer killer in the United States, yet it is one of the most preventable cancers. |
Researchers have discovered several causes of lung cancer, most of which are related to the use of tobacco products including cigarettes, cigars, pipes and even exposure to second-hand tobacco smoke. Other known causes of lung cancer include radon gas and asbestos. Certain lung diseases, such as tuberculosis (TB), also increase a person's chance of developing lung cancer.
There are two main types of lung cancer, nonsmall cell lung cancer and small cell lung cancer. Nonsmall cell lung cancer is the more common type and generally grows and spreads more slowly. Small cell lung cancer is less common, but it grows more quickly and is more likely to spread to other organs in the body.
Recent studies have shown that x-rays or CT scans ordered by your doctor have been helpful in detecting lung cancer in its early stages.
