Prevention Trials
The Clinical Trials and Research office offers breast cancer prevention and prostate cancer prevention trials to qualified, healthy people.
STAR is a trial to determine the effectiveness of Tamoxifen or Raloxifene to prevent breast cancer in women at risk for developing the disease. Your risk factors may include a family history of breast cancer, age, never having borne a child, having your first child after age 30, first menstrual period at an early age, a history of benign breast disease that required biopsies, or other breast conditions.
The SELECT trial's purpose is to determine if taking selenium and/or Vitamin E supplements can prevent prostate cancer. Men who have joined are 55 or older (or an African American male age 50 or older), have no history of prostate cancer, have not had any other cancer for the last five years (except skin cancer) and are in generally good health.
Ginger, an ancient spice mostly known for its role as a distinctive "flavoring agent" for Asian and Indian food, may one day prove to play a significant role in easing post-chemotherapy nausea and vomiting.
Fatigue is a very common and troublesome side effect patients experience during chemotherapy treatment. The modafinil study will increase knowledge about the usage of this medication for a potential treatment for fatigue that develops during chemotherapy.
