Pacemaker Implantation

The Forsyth Cardiovascular Institute offers pacemaker implantation. During this surgical procedure, the device is inserted beneath the skin to continuously monitor the heart's rhythm and will send the electical impulse when it detects the heart beating too slowly.
Pacemakers are small, battery-operated devices that send painless electrical impulses through an electrode placed in the heart to help the heart beat properly. When the heart beat is above a certain level, most pacemakers will turn themselves off and then reactivate when the heart slows down again
Pacemakers are used in patients with slow heart rates, which can occur as a part of the normal aging process or because of damage to the heart.
