Signs & Symptoms of a Heart Attack
|
||
Forsyth Medical Center opened the doors to its new, 55,000 square foot emergency department (ED) on October 26, 2004. Doubling the size of the old ED now makes this the largest in the state.
The new ED is divided into six specifically designed units incorporating "best practices" for the efficient assessment and treatment of patients.
-
26 Major Treatment Beds
- This area is used to treat life-threatening situations (stroke, heart attack, multiple injuries, severe bleeding, chest pains and seizures)
-
21 Minor Treatment Beds
- These beds are reserved for patients whose conditions aren't life-threatening, but could become more dangerous if not treated promptly
-
12-bed Clinical Decision Unit
- This unit will allow for 23-hour observation without admission of ED patients (for congestive heart failure, asthma, deep vain thombosis and chest pain)
-
10 Express Admission Beds
- This is for non-critical ED patients admitted to the hospital. Registration, admission orders and any necessary treatments will begin in this area before the patient is transfered to a room in the hospital.
-
8 Fast Track Beds
- This area will allow ED personnel to assess and treat patients with minor illness and injuries such as sprains, colds, sore throats, earaches or chronic back pain.
-
3 Behavioral Health Beds
- These will provide treatment to patients with mental or emotional distress (crisis intervention, substance abuse, depression, anxiety, addictive behavior and stress management).
The Emergency Department provides access to quick diagnostic technology with four x-ray rooms and a state-of-the-art 64-slice CT scanner, which will provide more precise imaging for improved diagnostics. In addition to the advanced technologies, the ED has an expanded triage unit, space for emergency medical services and a visitor waiting area with a children's play center, food service area and an area with Internet connections. Additional features include:
Initial Assessment
When you first come to the Emergency Department, you will receive an assessment by a triage nurse. The nurse will record your vital signs and ask the reason for your visit. This assessment determines the nature of your illness or injury.
Medical Screening Examination
As a part of the care provided by the Emergency Department at Forsyth Medical Center, you have the right to have an appropriate medical screening examination performed by a doctor or his or her physician extender. Based on the medical emergency that you are experiencing, you will receive treatment reflecting the capabilities of Forsyth Medical Center staff and facilities. If we do not have the necessary resources to treat or stabilize your condition, the hospital will arrange for you to be transferred to another facility that can meet your needs.
Visitors
The treatment area is limited. Only one family member or friend may stay with the patient. For privacy, confidentiality and your safety, we request that all visitors stay by the patient's bedside in the treatment area.
Additional Emergency Services
The Forsyth Medical Center Critical Care Transport Unit is available to bring adult patients in serious condition from other hospitals to Forsyth Medical Center for treatment.
