Outpatient Evaluations
Outpatient audiology evaluations are done to determine auditory (hearing) status and needs, determine central auditory function, and determine how inner ear problems may affect another diagnosis. Common testing done includes speech discrimination, noise sensitivity, tinnitus (ringing in the ears)and sensorineural and conductive testing. Recommendations for amplification devices (such as hearing aids) are made when appropriate.
Hearing Aids
In 2003, Forsyth Rehabilitation Center purchased the Audera System. This system is the most cutting-edge technology for precisely evaluating hearing loss and fitting hearing aids for individual needs. We offer a comprehensive selection of hearing aids, accessories and follow-up care for children and adults.
These services are available in the outpatient area of Whitaker Rehabilitation Center. Call 718-1642 to make an appointment. A physician order is required for some services.
Newborn Hearing Screens
Our hearing screening program for newborns at Forsyth Medical Center has won praise as a model program for the state. Started in 1999, this program screens all infants before discharge from the hospital. Approximately 7,000 babies are screened per year!
Infants who do not pass the screening are referred to an audiologist at Whitaker Rehabilitation Center for further testing and parent/family consultation. Audiologists identify babies with permanent hearing loss and make recommendations for intervention. They counsel the parents and, together, the audiologist and parents determine what hearing aid will best meet the needs of the child. Our audiologists can provide follow-up care for that child throughout his/her life as needs change.
