Whitaker Rehabilitation Center provides comprehensive inpatient rehabilitation. We help people regain independence lost to disease, injury, or surgery. Whitaker has been a regional leader in providing Rehabilitation since 1971.
- Every patient at Whitaker receives a customized plan of treatment after evaluation.
- In addition to rehabilitation nurses and therapists, the staff includes a physiatrist (physician trained in rehab medicine), psychologists, social workers, registered dieticians and others.
- Patients benefit from a Care Coordinator who meets regularly with the patient and family to review progress towards goals, coordinate the activities of the treatment team and provide an opportunity for the patient/family to give input into goal setting.
- Whitaker consistently ranks above the region and nation in the percentage of patients returning to live at home.

- Aquatic therapy to improve movement and coordination and improve exercise capability
- Animal-assisted therapy using goal-directed play with animals to enhance other therapy programs
- Cooking groups to evaluate safety and function in the kitchen and teach skills to improve independence in the home setting
- Activities of Daily Living apartment used for overnight or weekend stays by patients and families. This provides a home-like setting to prepare for return to home.
- North Carolina Assistive Technology Project Office, located in Whitaker, provides a wide range of assistive devices to try with patients
- A community re-entry program directed by a Recreation Therapist provides opportunities for patients to take short trips into the community. These outings may include shopping, banking or dining out to improve their safety, confidence and socialization skills prior to discharge.
- Driving Rehabilitation Program

Outpatient clinics for the following:
- wheelchair fitting and modification
- low vision evaluation and training
- prosthetic fitting and modification for amputees
- hearing evaluation and treatment
- mouth and facial deformity evaluations in children
- augmentative communication device needs analysis
- North Carolina Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) office and Counselor are located in Whitaker to provide assistance with returning to work.
- Supported Employment program for people with brain injuries to help re-enter the workforce
- Beauty shop services, available Monday - Friday, from 8:30 AM to 5 PM
- Weekly religious services
- Seasonal social events for patients, families, and staff.
