Spinal Cord Injury
| We understand how lives are affected by unexpected spinal cord injuries. Our interdisciplinary team provides state-of-the-art care. |
From the first days after a spinal cord injury, an interdisciplinary team provides state-of-the-art care at Forsyth Medical Center to help each patient achieve the highest level of independence possible.
Those who are ready to leave the hospital but have potential to improve with intensive rehabilitation may come to Whitaker Rehabilitation Center. At Whitaker, patients benefit from care provided by many certified rehabilitation registered nurses and other experienced staff. Whitaker has a strong tradition of discharging patients to their home instead of another level of residential care. The experienced staff at Whitaker provides many specialized services to meet the unique needs of these patients. These services include skin care training, toileting training, bowel and bladder training, wheelchair fitting and instruction, and activities of daily living instruction.
There is a large branch of the North Carolina Assistive Technology Project in Whitaker Rehabilitation Center. Staff may bring patients to this center to select and try environmental control devices and other adaptive equipment they may need when returning home. Whitaker Rehabilitation Center has agreements with wheelchair vendors to allow patients to use chairs before purchasing. We are dedicated to providing the most effective rehabilitation treatments for spinal cord injury.
A Seating Clinic is available on an outpatient basis at Whitaker Rehabilitation Center for people who need a new wheelchair or modifications to their current wheelchair.
The Driving Rehabilitation Program helps people affected by injury, illness or disability return to driving through evaluation and training.
Outpatient Therapy
After returning home, outpatient therapy can bring further gains in independence. The Martinat Outpatient Rehabilitation Center has been providing expert care for people who have had a spinal cord injury since it opened in 1989. Specialized therapists help patients improve mobility and strength, as well as attain more independence in activities of daily living. Treatments are planned with individualized goals and may include physical and occupational therapy. The Martinat Center has a strong history of helping people return to community independence. The Wellness Program promotes continued follow-through of exercises learned by offering inexpensive supervised or independent use of the Martinat facility after formal discharge from therapy.
