We specialize in helping people who are recovering from brain injury and stroke. People in the Supported Employment Program work with Vocational Rehabilitation and a Supported Employment Specialist (or Job Coach) who identifies a client's work strengths and limitations, assists with locating appropriate job options, provides on-the-job training, and provides education as needed to employers and co-workers. The goal is to see that the client is right for the job and the job is right for the client. Supported Employment Specialists also assist with teaching compensatory strategies and utilizing adaptive devices when needed to ensure success.
The Supported Employment Program has four primary steps:
This is a review of the client's work interests, skills, experience, and modification needs. All evaluations and recommendations from other sources are reviewed to prevent unnecessary testing and evaluation. Work site assessments may be completed during this time.
This step consists of searching for and locating a job that best matches the client's skills, interests, and needs.
The Job Coach provides one-on-one assistance so the client learns the necessary skills and practices them on the job. The Job Coach may assist the client with developing different approaches to complete job tasks accurately and efficiently. As the client becomes able to complete job requirements independently, the Job Coach gradually decreases time at the work site. The Job Coach works with both the client and the employer to assure that the employer's needs are met and to ensure the employer understands the nature of the client's disability, strengths, and job modification needs.
The Job Coach will be available to provide support to the client and employer. This may be in the form of consultation, on-site visits, or reassessment. People may change and the needs of the employer may change. Sometimes jobs aren't a good match. As long as the client remains motivated and willing to work, the Job Coach will assist the client in other jobs.
