Constipation
| Most commonly, constipation refers to infrequent or decreased bowel movements. |
Common causes for constipation include:
- Insufficient fiber and fluid intake
- Little or no exercise
- Environmental changes (traveling)
- Pregnancy
- Change in diet
- Ignoring the urge to have a bowel movement

Medications
- pain killers
- antidepressants
- tranquilizers
- blood pressure medication
- diuretics
- iron and calcium supplements
- antacids (those containing aluminum)
- Narrowing in the colon (more serious constipation)
If any of these symptoms carry on for more than three weeks, talk to your doctor. If blood appears in the stool, consult your doctor or colon and rectal surgeon immediately.
Treatments for constipation include:
- High fiber foods (bran, shredded wheat, whole grains, certain fruits and vegetables)
- Increased fluid
- Lifestyle changes (exercise)
- Fiber supplement
