Hemorrhoids
| Hemorrhoids are one of the most common disorders known. |
Hemorrhoids are enlarged blood vessels in and around the anus. There are two types--internal and external.
External Hemorrhoid
This type developes near the anus and feels like a hard, sensitive lump. Sometimes they rupture which causes bleeding.
Internal Hemorrhoid
This type devlopes within the anus. The most common symptoms for this type of hemorrhoid include painless bleeding and protrusion during bowel movements. Sometimes the internal hemorrhoid can protrude from the anal opening causing severe pain.
Common Causes of Hemorrhoids
- Aging
- Chronic constipation or diarrhea
- Pregnancy
- Heredity
- Faulty bowel function due to overuse of laxatives or enemas
- Straining during bowel movements
- Spending long periods of time on the toilet
Symptoms
- Bleeding during bowel movements
- Protrusion during bowel movements
- Itching
- Pain
- Sensitive lumps
Treatment of mild cases:
- Increase in fiber and fluid intake
- Sitz bath
Treatment of severe cases:
- Ligation (rubber band treatment)
- Injection and coagulation
