Pruritus Ani
| Pruritus ani, itching around the anal area, is a common condition. |
Causes of pruritus ani may include:
- excessive cleaning of anal area
- moisture around the anus
- drinking certain beverages (some alcohol, milk, citrus fruit juices, caffeinated beverages, cola)
- certain foods (chocolate, fruits, tomatoes, nuts, popcorn)

- pinworms
- psoriasis
- eczema
- dermatitis
- hemorrhoids
- anal fissures
- anal infections
- allergies
Preventive Measures and Treatment Methods

Avoid further distress to the affected area
- do not use soap on the area
- do not scrub the area
- for hygiene, use wet wipes or wet tissue to blot the area
- do not scratch the area

Avoid moisture in the anal area
- apply cotton, gauze or cornstarch powder to the area
- avoid medicated, perfumed or deodorant powders
- Use only medications your doctor prescribes
- Avoid excess fluid and foods which may cause pruritus ani (listed above)
