Rectal Prolapse
Rectal prolapse is a condition in which the rectum turns itself inside out. When this condition first presents, the rectum does not protrude of the body, but as the condition gets worse, it may begin to do so.
Causes of Rectal Prolapse
  • Straining to have bowel movements
  • Stress involved in childbirth
  • Genetic predisposition
  • Aging (ligaments that support the rectum become weak)
  • Neurologic problems (spinal cord transection or spinal cord disease)
Treatment of Rectal Prolapse
Rectal prolapse is commonly treated with abdominal or rectal surgery. Several factors will determine which method is appropriate for you. These factors include age, physical condition, extent of prolapse and various test results.
