The Labor and Delivery Experience
Arrival
There are several options when you arrive at the medical center, based on the mother's condition. If mom is comfortable enough, you can park in the visitor parking lot and walk into the hospital. Once inside, proceed to the 4th floor. If mom is not comfortable, you can pull up to the front of the hospital and turn your car over to one of the valet parking attendants (available Monday through Friday, from 6:30 am to 4:30 pm ET). If mom is too uncomfortable to walk, you may bring her to the emergency department where emergency personnel will assist her while you park the car.
Admissions
If you arrive between the hours of 6:00 am and 11:00 pm, and you have pre-registered, proceed to the OB Admissions area on the first floor.
Labor & Delivery Rooms
The Labor & Delivery rooms are located in six, four room clusters. These rooms are where you will be in labor, deliver your baby and recover from the delivery. Each room is fully equipped with a birthing bed, fetal monitoring equipment, closet for your personal items, full bathroom including a tub and shower, and other ammenities. The OB Operating Rooms, where Caesarean births occur, are located adjacent to the labor and delivery unit.
Family Waiting Room
The Women's Center has a comfortable waiting room available on the fourth floor for families.
Visiting Policies
You may have four people with you while you are in the Labor/Delivery/Recovery room. These visitors must be either in your room or in the waiting room on the fourth floor. If you have other children, they may visit or stay with you as you desire. Young children must be accompanied by an adult whose only responsibility is caring for the child. This adult must be a different person than the one who is supporting the mother through labor.
Mother & Baby Room
All of these rooms are private, and include private baths. After your baby's initial time in the nursery, your baby will remain in your room where a nurse will care for both of you.
Getting to Know Your Baby
We encourage you to practice basic infant care skills such as feeding, diapering and bathing. Your nurse will assist you in answering any questions you may have.
If you are going to breast feed your baby, the staff are prepared to help you get started. Certified lactation consultants are available to assist you with breastfeeding issues during your visit and even after you take your baby home. A full line of breastfeeding support products are available for sale or rental.
