OB Anesthesia
| There are a variety of pain management options for mothers during childbirth. |
Labor is a series of continuous, progressive contractions of the uterus that are necessary in readying your body for the delivery of the baby. Contractions occur when your belly tightens and becomes firm to the touch, then relaxes. Contractions tend to build in length and intensity during the course of your labor. While each labor is different, most women experience some degree of pain during uterine contractions.
There are many options available to laboring mothers to help manage the pain including:
- Analgesics: medications to relieve pain
- Non-medicated measures: special techniques including relaxation, touch, imagery, meditation, and breathing
- Anesthesia: medications that cause loss of sensation and block the pain such as epidural anesthesia, local block, spinal anesthesia, and general anesthesia
