Transfer Procedures
Some babies need a different type of care, which can be provided at another facility or another area of our NICU. Below are the processes for transfering a baby to another area or facility.
Transfer to Brenner Children's Hospital
Your doctor may decide that your baby needs to be transferred to Brenner Children's Hospital. Medical care at the Brenner nursery is supervised by a neonatalogist and there are many other specialists available to help care for your infant.
The Brenner Children's Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is located on the sixth floor of Ardmore Tower at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center at 300 South Hawthorne Road in Winston-Salem. The phone number is (336) 713-6428. Parents may call or visit 24 hours a day. You will need to talk to your baby's nurse at Brenner regarding visiting policies for other visitors.
Intermediate Nursery
The Intermediate Nursery at the Sara Lee Center for Women's Health at Forsyth Medical Center is an extension of the NICU. As your baby's condition improves, he or she may be moved to the Intermediate Nursery, which is staffed by NICU nurses. Visiting and phone information policies are the same as those in the NICU. You can reach the Intermediate Nursery by calling (336) 718-3150.
Transfer to Community Hospital
Many of our parents do not live close to Forsyth Medical Center. As your baby's condition improves, it may be possible to have him or her closer to home so that you may visit more often. If you would like to have your baby transferred to a hospital closer to your home, please tell your baby's doctor or nurse. Your pediatrician's name will be required to make necessary arrangements.
Below are the steps for transferring baby if needed:
  • Your doctor will talk with you and obtain your permission for the transfer
  • If possible, we will arrange for you to see your infant before he or she is transferred
  • A neonatal transport team will provide care for your baby in a specially equipped ambulance during the trip to Brenner
