Emily and William dominated the list of the top baby names at Forsyth Medical Centers Sara Lee Center for Womens Health in 2003. Emily has also been the most popular baby name for girls in the United States since 1996, according to the Social Security Administration. William ranked eleventh among boys names across the country in 2002, but was first in the state of North Carolina. Emily ranked third in the state in 2002, behind Madison.
More than 6,000 babies are born each year at the Sara Lee Center, and its interesting to see what names parents choose for their new sons and daughters. Those names are often chosen for a number of reasons family names, Biblical names, favorite soap opera, movie or television stars, or because its currently the most popular name.
The top five list of names for girls in 2003 at the Sara Lee Center included (in order): Emily, Emma, Madison, Abby, and Olivia. The top five list for boys included (in order): William, Jacob, Joshua, Matthew, and John and David (tied for fifth place).
The Sara Lee Center for Womens Health at Forsyth Medical Center is the second largest birthing center in North Carolina. In 2002, the staff of the NICU cared for 989 babies. The Sara Lee Center also has one of the highest success rates in the nation in caring for high-risk babies. Based on the Vermont Oxford, a comparison of more than 350 NICUs nationwide, the NICU at the Sara Lee Center for Womens Health ranks in the top one percent on length of stay before babies go home, and the top seven percent for infection control, a leading cause of death in premature and low birth weight babies.
