Winston-Salem, NC - 50 Forsyth Medical Center physicians were recently recognized for delivery of quality care to patients with diabetes. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) and National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) Diabetes Physician Recognition Program is designed to improve the quality of care patients receive by recognizing physicians who deliver quality diabetes care. More than 75 percent of recognized physicians in North Carolina are affiliated with Forsyth Medical Center.
"For people living with chronic illness, the right health care can be the difference between an active life and disability or death. This program steers people to doctors who can help them manage their conditions," said Margaret OKane, NCQA president. Quality diabetes care is important because persons with diabetes who receive quality care are less likely to have complications such as heart attacks, stroke, blindness, amputations or kidney disease.
NCQA developed a set of protocols required of physicians to reach recognition status. Those protocols include:
- Nephrology assessment
- Routine eye exams
- Routine blood sugar testing (A1Cs)
- Routine foot exams
The audit examines the first 35 patient records for a period of one year and establishes physician compliance with the protocol.
