Medical Centers Partner in Stroke Programs

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center and Forsyth Medical Center have been awarded a grant by the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust to administer North Carolina (NC) Stroke Association programs in surrounding rural counties.
The objective of the project is to create, over a period of three years, a Piedmont Region nucleus site for NC Stroke Association programs in Forsyth County that are supported by a partnership between the two medical centers.
The long term goal is to implement the Stroke Risk Identification Program and Hospital Visitation Program in ten western/northwestern North Carolina counties that lie within the partner hospitals service areas. During the initial three-year period, programs will be implemented in Davidson, Davie, Stokes and Surry counties.
A program coordinator was hired and this month began working out of the Piedmont Region office at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. The plan for year one is to
screen 600-800 people in Surry County and to provide hospital visitations to all consenting stroke survivors admitted to the stroke units at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital and Northern Hospital of Surry County.
In year two the program will expand to Lexington Memorial Hospital, an affiliate of Wake Forest Baptist, and Thomasville Medical Center, an affiliate of Forsyth Medical Center, in Davidson County. Two additional counties, Davie and Stokes, will be added in year three. For each year, an average of 600 people per county will be screened and hospital visitations will reach all stroke survivors who are admitted to area hospitals in each participating county.
Budget for the three-year project is $237,683, with the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust awarding $154,149. The remainder will be contributed by Wake Forest Baptist and Forsyth Medical Center. The two medical centers have agreed to sustain the programs beyond the three-year grant.
