Winston-Salem, NC - Eugene Paschold, M.D., an oncologist at Piedmont Hematology Oncology Associates, has been treating patients at the Derrick L. Davis Forsyth Regional Cancer Center for more than 22 years. Recently, Dr. Paschold was diagnosed with colon cancer and has now founded a chemotherapy support group - the first of its kind in the area to be led by a physician who is himself undergoing chemotherapy.
The support group, which will begin on Tuesday, April 26, focuses on the physical and emotional side effects of chemotherapy. Dr. Paschold says his experiences as an oncologist and a cancer patient have helped him not only in founding the support group but also in treating his own patients.
"My friends tell me that I am now the 'complete oncologist,' and I think they are right," Dr. Paschold says. "There are things that I have learned that I never could have learned unless I had cancer. And I do think those things make me a better doctor."
