Winston-Salem, NC - As one of the leading cardiac and vascular care centers in North Carolina, Forsyth Medical Center has received the prestigious designation as a nationally accredited Chest Pain Center from The Society of Chest Pain Centers (SCPC). This designation recognizes the medical center's expertise and commitment to quality patient care by meeting or exceeding nationally established stringent criteria and completing on-site evaluations by a review team from the SCPC.
"Few hospitals in the country meet the rigorous standards required to receive accreditation from The Society of Chest Pain Centers," says Jeff Lindsay, director of the Forsyth Cardiac and Vascular Center. "This national recognition of our achievements in providing cardiac care is another indication of the superior level of medical care available at Forsyth's Cardiac and Vascular Center."
To receive Chest Pain Center accreditation, Forsyth was required to demonstrate its expertise and commitment to quality cardiac care by meeting or exceeding a wide set of stringent criteria and completing on-site evaluations by a review team from the Society of Chest Pain Centers.
Key areas in which Forsyth Medical Center was required to demonstrate expertise include:
  • Integrating the emergency department with the local emergency medical system
  • Assessing, diagnosing, and treating patients quickly
  • Effectively treating patients with low risk for acute coronary syndrome and no assignable cause for their symptoms
  • Having a functional design that promotes optimal patient care
  • Ensuring Chest Pain Center personnel competency and training
  • Maintaining organizational structure and commitment
  • Continually seeking to improve processes and procedures
  • Supporting community outreach programs that educate the public to promptly seek medical care with the onset of symptoms of a possible heart attack
Additionally, FMC has received special commendation from the SCPC as the first Accredited Chest Pain Center in the country to successfully demonstrate the ability to synchronize time between EMS, emergency room and cardiac departments within the hospital. This means FMC has the systems, technology, and board-certified emergency physicians and cardiologists available 24/7 to streamline care, from diagnosis to treatment.
The goal of the Society of Chest Pain Centers is to significantly reduce the mortality rate of these patients by teaching the public to recognize and react to the early symptoms of a possible heart attack, reduce the time that it takes to receive treatment and increase the accuracy and effectiveness of treatment.
The Society of Chest Pain Centers (SCPC) is an international professional society focused on improving care for patients with acute coronary syndromes and related maladies. Established in 1998, the Society is dedicated to patient advocacy and focusing on ischemic heart disease.
Forsyth Medical Center is one of seven hospitals that are part of Novant Health, a not-for-profit healthcare system based in North Carolina.
