WINSTON-SALEM & CHARLOTTE - Novant Health, the not-for-profit health system that includes Presbyterian Hospital and its affiliates, has named Charlotte businessman John R. Belk to serve on the Novant board of trustees. He will join the Novant board as its vice chairman.

Belk is president and chief operating officer of Belk, Inc., and formerly served as chairman of the Presbyterian Healthcare board of trustees.

"John brings a variety of talents and perspectives to our board," commented Paul Wiles, Novant Health president and CEO. "His business and entrepreneurial skills, his background as an employer who provides health benefits for staff and families, his healthcare experience serving on Presbyterians board John will increase the depth of knowledge for Novants governing body."

John Belk also serves as a director of Belk, Inc., and a board member for the Alltel and Ruddick corporations. He is an undergraduate of the University of North Carolina and earned his masters from the University of Virginia.

Belk also serves as an executive committee member of the United Way of Central Carolinas, a board member of Metro YMCA and advisory board member of Union Theological Seminary & Presbyterian School of Christian Education at Charlotte.

Novant Health consists of nine hospitals in North Carolinas Charlotte, Triad and southeastern regions: Presbyterian Hospital, Presbyterian Orthopaedic Hospital, Presbyterian Hospital Huntersville and Presbyterian Hospital Matthews of the Charlotte area; Forsyth Medical Center, Medical Park Hospital, Thomasville Medical Center and Wilkes Regional Medical Center (management services agreement) in the Triad region; and Brunswick Community Hospital along the coast. Other facilities and programs of Novant Health include two nursing home and senior residential facilities, 122 physician clinics, outpatient surgery and diagnostic centers, rehabilitation programs and community health outreach programs.
