Harmony, NC - Rodeo rider Amanda Stewart will vie for her third-consecutive Debby Burgess Memorial Roping and Barrel Race championship on Saturday, October 6, as area cowgirls saddle up to help fight breast cancer in our region. The event will be held at the Diamond V Arena in Harmony, NC.
Organized by Cowgirls with a Cause, the event honors Debby Burgess, a rodeo rider who competed in numerous events during her career and died of breast cancer in 2003. All proceeds from the event will be donated to the Forsyth Medical Center Foundation to fund free or reduced-cost mammograms and treatment for women who either don't have health insurance or need financial assistance. Last year's event raised more than $16,000 that helped 122 women in seven counties.
"This event honors Debby Burgess, a woman who many of us knew and loved, but it also provides us with an opportunity to educate women across our community about the importance of breast cancer prevention and early detection," explains Lyn Anderson, one of the event's coordinators. "Our goal is to raise enough money so that every woman in need will be able to receive vital screenings and treatment."
The event will begin at 10 a.m. and will include a Ladies 4D Barrel Race and A&B Ladies Breakaway Roping. The grand prize for the all-around winner is the use of a 2007 Kiefer-Built Horse Trailer for one year, provided by Diamond V Trailer Sales. Other prizes include saddles, buckles and bridles.
Admission is $5, and children are free. For more information about Cowgirls with a Cause or the fourth annual Debby Burgess Memorial Roping and Barrel Race, visit www.cowgirlswithacause.com.
