2011 "Smash Cancer" Tennis Tournament
Triad tennis players take to the court October 13-14, 2011, to "smash" cancer. Proceeds from the annual doubles tennis benefit support the nurse navigator program at the Derrick L. Davis Forsyth Regional Cancer Center. Nationally recognized as a leader in patient navigation, our program was the first in North Carolina and one of the first in the country.
Organizers of the tournament are Vicki and Maurice Everette and Beth and Sandy Baldwin, who several years ago made a generous gift to help create a clinical trial and research area in memory of their son, Branner Dixson Baldwin. The past six tournaments raised more than $120,000 to support the Cancer Center's nurse navigator program, which provides individual guidance and support to patients in treatment for breast, lung, gastrointestinal, thoracic, neurological, prostate and GYN cancer.
Held at Visions Tennis Center, 3.0/3.5 ladies doubles play Thursday, and 4.0/4.5 ladies doubles play Friday. This year, men's doubles play Thursday evening. Friday evening features a BBQ dinner celebration.
Complete the form here to register. Or, make a donation today to support the nurse navigator program (in the comments box please note "Smash Cancer"), or mail your gift to the Forsyth Medical Center Foundation, 3333 Silas Creek Parkway, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
Athena's Run
By anyone's standards, the inaugural Athena's Run for GYN Cancer was a huge success, raising $50,000 for educational resources, treatment support and research programs related to gynecologic cancers. Each year, approximately 80,000 women are diagnosed with a new gynecologic cancer and 27,000 women will die from one of these cancers. Athena's Run celebrates the lives of those who have conquered a gynecologic cancer, increases awareness and knowledge of these specific cancers and raises money to help those who continue to battle GYN cancers.
The second annual Athena's 5K run and 1 mile survivors' walk will be at Tanglewood Park October 22, 2011. Registration information will be available in July. Make a donation today to support GYN Cancer patients (in the comments box please note "GYN Cancer Fund"), or mail your gift to the Forsyth Medical Center Foundation, 3333 Silas Creek Parkway, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
Cowgirls with a Cause
Save the date for the seventh Cowgirls with a Cause rodeo benefit November 19-20, 2011. This popular event honors the memory of Debby Burgess, an avid rodeo competitor who died of breast cancer in 2003. Proceeds from the rodeo provide mammogram screenings and diagnostic procedures for women with limited financial resources. Early detection through regular mammogram screenings greatly increases the chances for a successful outcome.
Cowgirls of all ages will ride at the Lone Hickory Indoor Arena in Yadkinville, N.C., to help women in need in our community. This two-day, fun-filled event is a great way for the entire family to join the fight against breast cancer.
To make a donation to the Debby Burgess Fund, mail the pledge card with your information to: Forsyth Medical Center Foundation, 3333 Silas Creek Parkway, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. Or, donate today online.
For more information or to register for the Debby Burgess Memorial Rodeo, please visit the Cowgirls with a Cause website.
Think Pink Golf Tournament
Supporters of the Think Pink Golf Tournament understand some of the unfortunate circumstances that stand between our community's women and routine mammogram screening for breast cancer. Early detection is the single best way to ensure better outcomes. That is why the Kay W. Pitts Think Pink Fund tournament raises funds for uninsured and underinsured women to have a mammogram. Close to 250 women have been helped in the past three years with donations raised in memory of Kay W. Pitts, who died of breast cancer in 1994.
Hold the date of June 1, 2012, for the fourth annual Think Pink Golf Tournament. Until then, make a contribution online to the Kay W. Pitts Think Pink Fund by clicking here (in the comments box please note "Think Pink Fund"), or mail your gift to Forsyth Medical Center Foundation, 3333 Silas Creek Parkway, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
The Garden Party
The Women's Council of Forsyth Medical Center Foundation annually presents The Garden Party, its signature fundraising event to raise support to improve the health of all women in our community. Proceeds from the first three events have provided mammograms for women who otherwise could not afford one, scholarships to Girls on the Run for underprivileged pre-teens to enhance their health and esteem, funds to help abuse and rape victims coming into the Emergency Department and a program to help elderly women safely transition from hospitalization back home.
At its 2011 Garden Party, the Women's Council announced a milestone commitment of $195,000 over three years to create a GYN nurse navigator program. Donning hats and guided by their mission, Women's Council members promote and support excellence in health for women in our community of all ages and circumstances. We invite you to visit the Women's Council website to learn more.
Forsyth Medical Center Auxiliary
In 1971, 615 women chartered the Forsyth Medical Center Auxiliary to support hospital programs. In addition to giving their time, the Auxiliary generates income to support the Medical Center through the FMC Gift Shop, Day One Newborn Photography and Lifeline, as well as through employee fundraisers. In 2007, the Auxiliary gave $1 million for the Forsyth Medical Center Community Conference Center, which is named in the group's honor. Anyone interested in giving time as a volunteer should contact Volunteer Services at 336-718-5738.
