Winston-Salem, N.C.-Forsyth Medical Center has opened a Limb Preservation Center to reduce the number of limb amputations in patients with complications from conditions such as diabetes, peripheral artery disease and injury. Staffed by specialists including vascular surgeons, interventional cardiologists, wound care specialists, and dietitians, the limb preservation program also treats patients with conditions such as:

* Diabetic foot ulcers

* Foot and ankle deformities

* Deep vein thrombosis

* Arterial occlusive disease

* Critical limb ischemia

"With conditions such as diabetes and obesity on the rise, more patients are at risk for foot and leg diseases that can result in a need for amputation if the condition is not properly cared for," says R. Bradley Thomason III, MD, medical director of the Limb Preservation Center at Forsyth Medical Center. "The Limb Preservation Center offers specialized treatments for these patients and provides education on self-care and wellness to prevent a worsening of their condition"
