Screening vs. Diagnostic Mammogram

Screening mammograms are for women who do not have significant symptoms, such as a lump or black or bloody nipple discharge. Women with these symptoms should have a diagnostic mammogram, which must be scheduled by a physician.

Forsyth Medical Center offers digital mammography, the latest advancement in the early detection of breast cancer. New digital capabilities will enable the technologist to immediately view images on the screen, thereby reducing the amount of time spent in the imaging suite and the need for retakes.

Digital mammography may be more accurate in screening women:

• Under the age of 50.
• Of any age with very dense or extremely dense breast tissue.
• Of any age who are pre- or perimenopausal.
