Surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy are common treatments for lung cancer. It is important to talk to your physician about which treatment is best for you.

Medical Oncology Treatments

  • Chemotherapy uses drugs to destroy lung cancer cells by interfering with their growth and reproduction . Treatment plans may vary depending on the stage and type of lung cancer.  Fractionated dose chemotherapy, the latest advance in delivering anti-cancer drugs, allows teh total chemotherapy dose to be divided into smaller amounts given over several days.  This helps doctors to reduce unwanted side effects while maintaining therapeutic benefits.
  • Biological Therapy - In biotherapy, patients are treated with biologic response modifiers, which boost the body's immune system to help fight cancer.

Radiation Oncology Treatments

  • Radiation Treatment on the Linear Accelerator  - Radiation therapy uses high energy x-rays and other types of radiation to kill cancer cells.
Advanced radiation treatment using the Linear Accelerator is available in the Radiology Oncology Unit at the Derrick L. Davis Forsyth Regional Cancer Center.
