Chemotherapy is a treatment in which drugs are given intravenously, by injection or by mouth. While the treatment is most commonly used in combination with surgery and radiation therapy, chemotherapy can be used for many purposes depending on the type of cancer and the degree to which it has progressed.
There are a variety of chemotherapy drugs available, and they are often prescribed in combination with one another. In some cases the drugs are even used to relieve the symptoms caused by cancer.
Chemotherapy is given in cycles: a treatment period followed by a recovery period, then another treatment, and so on. Most patients receive chemotherapy as an outpatient at Forsyth Cancer Center, however chemotherapy is also given to patients staying in the Inpatient Oncology Unit at Forsyth Medical Center.
