For certain types of cancer, surgical removal of the tumor is the easiest, most effective method of treatment. In many cases it is just the tumor, or a part of the tumor, that is removed. However, it might be necessary to remove an entire diseased organ, such as a lung or kidney.

Surgery can have side effects depending on the location of the tumor and the type of operation performed. The length of time it takes to recover from an operation varies for each patient depending on many factors such as age and general health.

Historically, surgery was the first method used to remove or eliminate cancer cells. Now it is sometimes used in conjunction with other treatment procedures such as radiation or chemotherapy.
