The Derrick L. Davis Forsyth Regional Cancer Center offers various surgical procedures for the treatment of endometrial and ovarian cancer. In addition to the type and stage of the cancer, other factors that may influence surgical treatment decisions include a woman's age and overall health condition. One of the most common surgical procedures is called a Hysterectomy.
Hysterectomy
A hysterectomy can be performed for a variety of diseases, but it is particularly useful in treating cancer of the uterus and ovary. During a hysterectomy, the surgeon usually removes not only the uterus but also both ovaries and the fallopian tubes. The surgeon may also do multiple biopsies of the inside of the abdomen and might remove lymph nodes if indicated. These are sent to the lab where a pathologist examines the tissue samples under a microscope to see if there has been any spread of the cancer. This ensures that as much of the cancer as possible is removed.
