Three main types of lung surgery are commonly used to treat lung cancer. Depending on the stage and type of cancer, either portions of the lung will be removed or the entire lung itself.
Segmental or Wedge Resection
Segmental or wedge resection surgery removes only a small part of the lung. A wedge resection can be performed by minimally invasive video assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) or a thoracotomy (open chest surgery).
Lobectomy
During a lobectomy, an entire lobe of the lung is removed in order to eliminate the tumor and any cancerous tissue around it. Removal of two lobes is called a bilobectomy.
Pneumonectomy
A pneumonectomy is a operation that removes an entire lung in order to treat the patient's cancer. This is done as an open chest technique.
VATS
Video Assisted Thoracic Surgery wedge restrictions or lobectomies are performed by removing diseased portion of the lung through a small incision, with the help of a video camera.
