Navigator Program

Navigators serve as compassionate and knowledgeable guides, helping to assist cancer patients through the medical process on topics such as education about treatment pathways, treatment options and personalized care. From the beginning, the nurse navigator can make a difference by clarifying the patient's condition and the necessary next steps. The aim is to empower the patient and help them feel in control.

The Derrick L. Davis Forsyth Regional Cancer Center was one of the first cancer centers in the country to offer patient navigation.

Navigators help patients travel through the healthcare system by facilitating communication between the patient and the members of their personal healthcare team, coordinating the care among the needed providers and increasing the awareness of local resources for patient care.

Our program serves patients diagnosed with the following cancers:

  • Breast
  • Lung/esophageal
  • Anal/colorectal,/pancreatic/liver/gastric
  • Prostate, kidney, bladder
  • GYN (Gynecologic)
  • Neuro (brain tumors)

The navigator's initial job is to meet with the patient and review what doctors have told them about their disease and treatment options, and then answer any questions on the potential side effects of the treatment to help the patient make an informed decision.  Throughout the treatment process, navigators help to coordinate the patient's care, staying in frequent contact with the patient to make sure they are comfortable with the treatment and to answer questions that may arise that they don't feel comfortable asking the doctor or don't know who else to ask.  Navigators help make sure that people are not only well cared for, but that they also feel cared about.
