We at Forsyth Rehabilitation Center understand the sense of loss that accompanies the loss of a limb. Our compassionate staff has developed special programs to meet your unique rehabilitation needs. Our mentor program pairs previous patients with people with recent amputations to share experiences and offer support.
Acute Care
Rehabilitation care may start at Forsyth Medical Center (FMC) with patient and family education. As a patient at FMC, our committed staff will teach you specific exercises to improve strength and mobility of the affected limb. Your therapist will evaluate the need for adaptive equipment you may need to be independent in daily activities.
Inpatient Treatment
For patients needing intensive therapy, Forsyth Rehabilitation Center in the Whitaker Building has developed a model inpatient program for amputees. Treatment plans include education of how to care for the affected limb and training to regain independent mobility. The staff will instruct you in new methods to walk, get in and out of bed, perform personal grooming and train you to use a wheelchair. At every stage of the rehabilitation program, care is taken to involve the family and patient in goal setting and treatment.
Your treatment team will include physical therapists, occupational therapists, physicians, rehabilitation nurses, recreation therapists, and social workers. Where employment issues exist, Vocational Rehabilitation counselors will be consulted.
Outpatient Treatment
Specialized outpatient services for amputees include a Wheelchair and Seating Clinic at Forsyth Rehabilitation Center. All Martinat Outpatient Rehabilitation Center locations provide further training for use of a wheelchair or a new prosthesis. Our therapy staff train you to walk independently with your prosthesis and teach you exercises to increase strength and range of motion in the affected limb.
