Acute Care
Patients scheduled for a spinal fusion surgery may be referred to a pre-operative class held each month. These classes include staff from physical therapy, occupational therapy, nursing, social work, and respiratory therapy who provide information on what to expect while in the hospital and how to prepare to return home after your surgery. This includes exercise instruction to help you prepare for surgery and introduces you to equipment you may use after surgery.
Inpatient Treatment
Forsyth Rehabilitation Center in the Whitaker building can provide inpatient intensive rehabilitation after you leave the hospital if you are not ready to go home. Rehabilitation will be directed to increase your independence and safety with walking, getting in and out of bed and chairs, self-care activities, putting on and taking off back braces when these are needed, and maintaining any movement and lifting restrictions while increasing your activity. Minimizing the pain you feel while doing this is always our goal. Your care givers are also trained to provide ongoing help to you after you leave Forsyth Rehab.
Your treatment regimen will include a physical therapy, occupational therapy and rehabilitative nursing, and may also include recreation therapy, rehabilitation psychology and social work. This team will also include physicians and a care coordinator.
