Outpatient Evaluations
Outpatient audiology evaluations are done to determine auditory (hearing) status and needs, determine central auditory function, and determine how inner ear problems may affect another diagnosis. Common testing done includes speech discrimination, noise sensitivity, tinnitus (ringing in the ears)and sensorineural and conductive testing. Recommendations for amplification devices (such as hearing aids) are made when appropriate.
Hearing Aids
We offer a comprehensive selection of the most current digital hearing aids and accessories to meet the needs of adults, as well as children, with hearing loss. We use state-of-the-art equipment to produce accurate results in hearing loss evaluation and for precise fitting of hearing devices.
These services are available in the outpatient area of the Whitaker building at Forsyth Medical Center. Call 718-1642 to make an appointment. A physician order is required for some services.
Newborn Hearing Screens
Forsyth Medical Center provides hearing screening for all infants before discharge from the hospital as part of the NC Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Program. On average, 8,000 babies per year are screened at Forsyth Medical Center.
If a possible hearing deficit is detected, the infant is scheduled for further evaluation by an audiologist at Forsyth Rehabilitation Center. Audiologists identify babies with permanent hearing loss and make recommendations for intervention. They counsel the parents and, together, the audiologist and parents determine what hearing aid will best meet the needs of the child. Our audiologists can provide follow-up care for that child throughout his/her life as needs change.
