How are sleep disorders diagnosed?
Sleep specialists evaluate and diagnose sleep disorders. Often this begins with an examination in the sleep doctor's clinic. They will ask you about your sleep history, have you complete a questionnaire, and may ask you to keep a diary of your sleep patterns for a while. The doctor may also perform diagnostic tests or order an overnight sleep study.
Can sleep disorders be treated?
Most sleep problems are treatable. Once the tests and evaluations are complete, the sleep specialists will discuss your results and recommend a treatment plan. Our treatment recommendations may include:
Good sleep practices
Treatment with medication
Surgical treatment
Use of a machine to prevent your airway from closing while you sleep
Don't go to bed until you are drowsy
Make it a habit to sleep only in the bedroom
Make sure your bedroom is quiet with low light, and the room temperature is comfortable
Don't eat large meals before bed; a light snack may help you sleep
Exercise regularly, but not late in the day
Limit caffeine, alcohol and smoking because they can interfere with the quality of your sleep
Avoid taking a nap during the day
Try to get up at the same time each day to establish a sleep/wake cycle
Try not to worry about problems. Remember, you'll be better at dealing with problems after a good night's sleep
