Some people realize they have a sleep disorder because they can't get to sleep or because they remember waking up at night. Others may have a sleep disorder and not be aware of it. Often the first sign of a sleep disorder is a complaint from your bed partner.

If you suffer from a sleep disorder, you may feel tired much of the time or doze easily during the day. You may even think your daytime sleepiness is normal, that everone feels that way, despite the concerns of family, friends and co-workers.

What are sleep disorders?

Sleep disorders can prevent you from getting a normal night's sleep. Learn More

What is a sleep center?

A sleep medicine center is a medical facility designed to evaluate people with sleep-related problems. Under the medical direction of a physician specializing in sleep medicine, a sleep center is staffed by specialized technologists trained to evaulate people during periods of sleep. The physician uses these diagnostic studies to determine the nature of the patients' sleep problems.

What is a sleep study?

A sleep study or polysomnogram is an overnight evaluation of your sleep patterns involving a detailed observation of your breathing, heart rate, brain waves and body movements while you sleep. These activities are monitored through sensors attached to the skin with special adhesives or tape. These sensors rest on the skin; they do not go into the skin. The polysomnographic technologists will do everything they can to help you have a normal night's sleep. Most patients find that they sleep about as well as they do at home.

What should I expect?

If you are to have a sleep study, you will receive information about how to prepare and what to bring with you for your overnight stay at the Forsyth Sleep Center. We suggest you prepare as you would anytime you will spend a night away from home; you can even bring your own pillow. You will have a private room and bath that is more like a hotel room than a hospital room. Many patients bring a change of clothes for the next day, shower and leave directly for work or other activities in the morning.
