Chaplaincy Services

Forsyth Medical Center's chaplaincy service is committed to caring for the special spiritual needs of patients and families. Chaplains are available to help patients and families of all faith traditions explore spiritual questions and concerns that may arise during hospitalization.

The chaplaincy services department at Forsyth Medical Center exists to strengthen our commitment to total patient care.  By ministering to the spiritual needs of patients, families and staff, we believe that healing is promoted.  A chaplain is available to provide emotional and spiritual support to patients and families despite religious affiliation. Research shows a connection between spirituality and good health, and for patients this may mean an increased sense of well-being, less fear of death, less discomfort and decreased loneliness. We offer the following to our patients and their families:

  • Individual and group prayer
  • Pastoral comfort and support
  • Rituals as requested by patients or families (baptism, communion, etc.)
  • Communication and follow-up with patient's local clergy and/or faith community
  • Counseling by a faith representative of the patient's choice
  • Weekly worship services for those patients whose circumstances and conditions allow for leaving their respective hospital units
  • Conversations regarding end of life concerns

We provide ministry to those who have no pastor of their own, and support the ministry local congregations provide to those who are sick.  Pastoral support is provided by three staff chaplains and a host of volunteer chaplains.

Volunteer Chaplains

Volunteer chaplains further extend the hospital’s ministry of spiritual support by providing trained and qualified men and women to serve alongside the three staff chaplains.  This ministry provides a caring and supportive presence to those who are facing illness, crisis, end of life and other life changing circumstances.

Volunteer Chaplains serve in a variety of capacities – making visits and rounds to nursing units during daytime hours or being available as an on-call chaplain for needs and crises that may arise during the evening hours and/or the weekend.

If you are interested and would like more information about these opportunities, please contact a member of the chaplaincy staff.  We would welcome the chance to talk with you further about our volunteer chaplains ministry.
