Healthy Family Adolescent Weight Management Program
Learn more about this program.
Childhood and adolescent obesity are rapidly approaching epidemic status. In North Carolina, one in every four children is seriously overweight, and the prime culprits are physical inactivity and poor nutrition habits.
Like adults, overweight and obese adolescents have a multitude of health problems, from diabetes to joint pain, menstrual irregularities and depression. Obesity also aggravates already existing chronic conditions, such as asthma.
HEALTHIER FAMILIES = HEALTHIER KIDS
Parents are the key to ensuring that children start taking their physical health seriously. By encouraging healthy eating habits and regular physical activity, parents can help ensure that their children achieve a balanced lifestyle. At the Sara Lee Center for Women's Health, we work with parents and teens to develop healthy eating plans and fun, energy-filled exercise routines. Our 12-week Healthy Family® Adolescent Weight Management Program targets overweight adolescent boys and girls, ages 10-18. This program helps the entire family adopt healthier lifestyles through education, counseling, family involvement and group support. Program curriculum offers health education, family involvement, peer support groups and a joint family session and separate age-appropriate breakout groups. We teach adolescents and their parents about how to adopt healthier lifestyles, choose healthy snacks and lunches, track caloric intake and portion control and about the importance of exercise. Before the program begins, each adolescent and parent will receive a profile including BMI, ideal body weight range, recommended calorie intake and exercise goals.
New sessions begin each quarter at various locations, days and times. Separate sessions are held for boys and girls and for middle school and high school ages as needed.
