Strong Women, Strong Bones

Research suggests that strength training reduces the risk of chronic disease and depression, improves sleep and contributes to a strong sense of well-being. Dr. Miriam Nelson, author of "Strong Women, Strong Bones" created this national program, which is offered at Forsyth. Call 336 718-6700 for more information or to register.

Program Description

This is a 12-week progressive exercise and education program divided into two, six-week phases. The program is based on research and directed by rehabilitation professionals in a medical wellness environment. These professionals will modify the program for individual capabilities. Program Design

The classes meet twice a week for two, six-week phases. Transition to the Martinat Outpatient Rehabilitation Center wellness program is encouraged after the completion of the program.

Program Goals--Participants in the program will:

  • Increase strength
  • Learn to independently perform an exercise program to increase bone density
  • Improve balance
  • Learn about issues affecting osteoporosis risks

Measuring Progress

An initial assessment will be performed at the first session and then progress will be measured at six weeks and 12 weeks to show improvement.

Program Leaders

An occupational therapist and a physical therapist assistant lead the Strong Women, Strong Bones program.

What to Bring:

  • Release form signed by your physician
  • Water bottle
  • Hand weights of 1, 3 and 5 pounds
  • Ankle weights of 10 pounds that are adjustable by one pound increments
  • Wear loose-fitting clothes

Cost

The cost for each six-week phase is $150 (24 classes at $12.50 each). Payment for the entire six-week phase is due on the first day of class. We accept cash, personal check, MasterCard or Visa.
